In the News - Shattered Dreams 2008 Awards Ceremony:

On Friday, July 25, 2008, the University of Texas Health Science Center
at San Antonio and the Texas Statewide Shattered Dreams Coalition
honored 14 outstanding individuals from organizations and communities
across the State of Texas for their hard work and dedication in making
the Shattered Dreams program a continued success. This year, as The
Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission celebrates the program's ten year
anniversary, the Shattered Dreams Coalition honored individuals and
organizations that have made a tremendous effort towards reducing
underage drinking and impaired driving in their community.

The Passionate Educator Award honors exceptional school and community organization employees who have worked feverishly in their school to make the Shattered Dreams program a success. This enthusiastic individual is recognized for their passion of education and love for students that drives them to promote programs in their school that will raise awareness about underage drinking and impaired driving among their students. This individual goes far beyond classroom and school activities to touch the lives of students.

Shattered Dreams Passionate Educator of the Year: Shannon Barkwell; Hillcrest Hospital Trauma Services
Passionate Educator of the Decade: Albert Quintero; Valley Baptist Medical Center Brownsville
The Public Servant Award honors individuals from public service positions who go above and beyond to provide support to a community's Shattered Dreams program. This individual is recognized for their effort to promote the program and provide ongoing assistance in the planning process.

Public Servant Award Nominees

- Laurie Townsend; Central Texas Medical Center
- Joe Larive; Chambers County Sherriff's Department
The Outstanding Follow-up Project Award honors a project that was created as an extension of the Shattered Dreams program to continue educating students, parents, and the community on the problems of underage drinking and impaired driving. The follow-up project uses the momentum from the program to increase awareness and continue promoting change.

Outstanding Follow-up Project of the Year
- Laredo Shattered Dreams Movie Theatre Viewing
- Abraham Diaz; Laredo Police Department
The Catalyst Award honors outstanding community individuals who have worked to promote the Shattered Dreams program in their community. These individuals are recognized for their great efforts and continued involvement in reducing underage drinking and impaired driving in their community. Through hard work and determination this individual worked to make their Shattered Dreams program a success.
